Easter Rising
The Easter Rising was a rebellion staged in Ireland during Easter Week, 1916. The Rising was an attempt by miltant Republicans to win independence from Britain.
It was the most significant uprising in Irish history. Organised by the Irish Volunteers it lasted from Easter Monday 24 April to 30 April 1916 led by Padraig Pearse and James Connolly.
Though a failure and receiving mixed public support the subsequent execution of the leaders by the British authorities provoked an outcry which eventually led to the Irish War of Independence.
