Presidents of Ireland

The President of Ireland is constitutionally elected by the people of Ireland under the 1937 Irish Constitution for a term of 7 years with a maximum of two terms allowed.

The presidency is largely a ceromonial office but the President does have some limited discretionary powers. Ireland's two most recent Presidents Mary Robinson and current President of Ireland Mary McAleese have been more publicly prominent than previous presidents. Mary McAleese is the first female head of state in the world to succeed another female in this position.

The official residence of the President is Aras an Uachtaran in the Phoenx Park in Dublin.
