Who Am I
The name Brennan derives from O'Braonáin meaning 'sorrow' and O'Branáin meaning 'raven'. O'Branáin was a tribal grouping claiming descent from Eoghan, one of the sons of Niall, the fourth century monarch and protigener of the O'Neills. Their territory was in the northern counties.
O'Braonain originated in 4 distinct areas, Kilkenny, Galway, Westmeath and Kerry. The Brennans of Kilkenny were once once of the paramount families of Leinster until the confiscation of their lands by english settlers in the 17th century. They then became outlaws. In Roscommon there was a separate MacBrennan sept.
Today it is one of the most common surnames in Ireland
